Storm Petrel ringing · Mark Newsome · Added 26 June 2008

The annual Storm Petrel ringing event at Whitburn Country Park is planned for the evening of Saturday 12th July.  A barbecue will be held by the fog station at Souter lighthouse from 6:00 p.m. onwards as was done last year, but because of various health & safety laws relating to cooking food on National Trust land, you'll have to bring your own burgers, sausages, chicken legs etc.

The tapes will be turned on around 10:30 p.m., so bring warm clothes, stout shoes and a torch.  Catching petrels is unpredictable - one may be caught after 20 minutes, or it could be an hour and a half.  Be prepared for a late night if you want to maximise your chances of seeing birds in the hand.

Please note that the event is weather dependent - a strong onshore wind or heavy rain would probably mean it is cancelled.  A message will be put on the home page of the DBC website and on BirdGuides to confirm either way, but watch the weather in advance.

Please also note that this event is not organised by the Durham Bird Club, so the DBC has no responsibility for what happens (or does not happen) on the day.
