Trip report: identification workshop in Upper Teesdale, 13th April 2008 · Derek Charlton · Added 21 April 2008

After miserable, cold, wet weather over the previous weeks, we hit on exactly the right weather for the club's fourth ID workshop in Teesdale.  It was a lovely, clear bright morning when we met at Cow Green Reservoir at 9 a.m.  Despite the lengthy travel it proved to be the most popular ID workshop, with around 20 members attending.  Wheatears were seen immediately on the wall of the car park, and we then set off on an enjoyable walk to Cauldron Snout.  On the way we had striking views of Great Dunn Fell and Cross Fell, all covered in snow.  Ringed Plover, Stonechats, Golden Plovers, Red Grouse and Oystercatchers were all seen in the area before we headed back for refreshments.  With only limited parking available thereafter, we decided to split up into separate groups.  Our group made its way back through the Langdon Beck area, where we had excellent views of around 30 Black Grouse in total, scattered about, plus great views of Redshank and drumming Snipe.  Several members had yet to see a Ring Ouzel, and a brief stop at Bollihope rewarded us with great views of a male, rounding off a pleasurable day.
