Trip report: Leighton Moss, 27th April 2008 · Derek Charlton · Added 28 April 2008

This was the last Durham Bird Club trip of the season, and the best was certainly saved till last.  31 members came along, and everybody agreed it was a trip to remember, with some fantastic birds seen.  Even the weather was on our side, with morning rain giving way to a pleasant, warm, mostly sunny afternoon.

On reaching Leighton Moss myself, the Chairman, and several others made the decision to visit the Morecambe hide first.  The mile-long walk was worth it, as when we arrived Spoonbill, Green-winged Teal, Spotted Redshank and a splendid summer-plumaged Mediterranean Gull were all in attendance.  500+ summer-plumaged Black-tailed Godwit were also a fantastic sight.

Back on the main reserve all members managed a glimpse or two of Bearded Tit, with several members treated to a great view of a beautiful male perched on the reeds nearby.  A nice suprise was a pair of Garganey which gave great views early afternoon.

Other birds seen during the afternoon included Egyptian Geese, Marsh Harriers, Little Egret and Avocets.

Everybody went home happy, with around 90 species seen.
