Local Field Trip Report - Hamsterley and surrounds - Sunday 5th April 2009 · Derek Charlton · Added 6 April 2009

A healthy turn out of around 20 members made the journey to the west of the County. Bright clear skies and a moderate breeze was a good sign that it could be a decent raptor day, and so it turned out.  After meeting up in Hamsterley village, a short journey was made to our first stop, near Knitsley Fell. This area commanded a good view of the eastern section of Hamsterley forest, with around 8 Buzzard, 2 Kestrel, 1 Stonechat and a large flock of Fieldfare seen in a short stay. Next port of call was Bollihope Quarry where around 4 or 5 Ring Ouzels were spotted, the majority of which were distant, although some members had good views of a singing male. A fly past Black Grouse was a surprise with numerous Red Grouse and a Wheatear also seen. Our final stop of the day was the top edge of Hamsterley near Woodland Fell. Scopes had hardly been set up when two male Goshawks were seen spiralling into the forest giving good views before heading east. A few minutes later a larger female emerged and soared high above the forest. Several more close views of Common Buzzards drew the curtain on an enjoyable day out west.
