Field trips by coach · John W. Todd · Added 24 July 2008
The following field trips have been arranged for the autumn. Please note that, due to the rocketing cost of fuel, the price given is approximate and may be subject to a slight increase by the date of the outing. If you would like to attend any of the field trips, book as usual (£5 deposit) by contacting:

| Sunday 14 September 2008 - Potteric Carr, South Yorkshire | Cost £15 (+ £2.50 entry) | ||||||
Our first ever visit to this site which has been recommended by one of our members as a good day out with plenty to see. The area has a good range of habitats, and species that may possibly be seen include Bittern, Hobby and Lesser Spotted Woodpecker, plus a wide range of waterfowl and waders. The bus will pick up as follows:

| Sunday 5 October 2008 - Northumberland coast | Cost £15 | ||||||
Back to an autumn favourite with a visit up the Northumberland coast including Holy Island. If the weather conditions are favourable this trip offers the chance to witness spectacular migration with large numbers of thrushes and other passerine migrants including rarities like Yellow-browed Warbler. If conditions are not so good for passerine migrants then there are still likely to be plenty of waders and wildfowl plus some seabirds to be seen on a day out that rarely disappoints. The bus will pick up as follows:

For those of you looking further ahead the following provisional dates have been booked for next year.
| Sunday 22 February 2009 - Laurieston and WWT Caerlaverock | Cost £18 |
| Sunday 26 April 2009 - Leighton Moss | Cost £16 |
Identification workshops · Added 24 July 2008
Following on from the success of previous workshops, this autumn will see a further three events, planned primarily with the aim of assisting new or inexperienced members with identification tips in relation to groups of species. If you require any further information on the wader or seabird identification sessions, please contact Paul Anderson on 0191-5236236 or 07950-144263.
| Wader identification | Castle Lake, Bishop Middleham | Sunday 17 August 2008 |
If you are left scratching your head trying to pick out a juvenile Ruff from the Redshank flock then the wader identification workshop is the outing for you. Last year the new Castle Lake reserve attracted Wilson's Phalarope and Pectoral Sandpiper during the autumn migration period along with many more expected migrants. Meet at the usual parking area in Bishop Middleham village at 9 a.m. (NZ326314). |

| Seawatching workshop | Whitburn Observatory | Sunday 31 August 2008 |
Two weeks later we will be concentrating on seabird identification. Species seen whilst seawatching are, perhaps more than any other group of birds, heavily influenced by prevailing weather conditions. So it could be quiet or very busy, depending on the weather on the day. In any event, there will be some seabirds to be seen and some of our more experienced seawatchers will be on hand to help those who require assistance with their seabird identification. Meet at the Whitburn Observatory at 9 a.m. The Observatory is situated right on the cliff top at the southern end of Whitburn Country Park. There is ample parking available in the southern car park at NZ411634 from which a footpath runs south then east to the Observatory. |

| Migration watch | Multiple locations | September / October 2008 |
If it is passerine identification that you would like assistance with, why not sign up for the coordinated migration watch. Full details, including contact information, are in the Projects and Surveys section of the Summer 2008 Lek. Ross Ahmed is the co-ordinator and will be happy to team up newcomers or inexperienced members with established old hands, so not only will you get assistance but you will also meet other members of the club. If you are interested in this activity please note that dates are flexible, but if you have any queries you can speak to Ross. |

Suggestions for further trips · John Todd
Full details of any further coach trips planned will appear here and in The Lek. If you are new either to birding or to the area we are visiting, please let us know and we will try to pair you up with a more experienced tripper.
I would like to run some extra trips from 2006 onwards. Below are some of the suggestions that have been made so far. I would appreciate your views on these and any ideas for future trips that you may have. Please let me know if you would be interested in taking part (this is not a booking) in any of the trips and I will try to run the most popular ones. Note that all trips to RSPB and WWT reserves require either membership or payment for entry.
The Seabird Centre and boat trip around Bass Rock (July). This trip would involve an additional charge for your place on the boat.
Musselburgh and Aberlady Bay (winter).
Pelagic from South Shields. A pelagic trip from the Tyne with a pick-up at South Shields. A four-hour evening trip this year, and possibly an eight-hour day trip or further four-hour trips from 2007.
The Farne Islands. Once again, this would involve extra charges for the boat and landing.
The British Birdwatching Fair (August).
Please contact me with your views, either by e-mail to johnt0dd@tiscali.co.uk or by phone on 07810 347333.
